10 Ways You Can Help Make Houston THE Energy Conservation Capital

  1. Adopt the use of energy-efficient low mercury compact fluorescent or LED light bulbs.
  2. Keep electronic files instead of paper files.
  3. Hibernate/turn off/unplug all computers and peripherals when not in use. Or use a “smart” power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts phantom energy use.
  4. Encourage your company to participate in the EPA’s ENERGY STAR and Green Light programs.
  5. Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  6. Make sure that bulbs, fixtures, lenses, lamps and reflective surfaces are cleaned regularly. By removing dust and other debris, you can increase the output of your lights.
  7. Specify ENERGY STAR office equipment.
  8. Promote good energy practices at work.
  9. Take advantage of natural daylight: turn off the lights when adequate sunlight is available to illuminate office space.
  10. Turn off the lights whenever you leave your office.
